Mike Barclay & Ben Tawil
Mike Barclay, along with Ben Tawil, runs Ludicology, a leading organization that offers consulting, research and training services in the field of playfulness.Mike is also the leader of Play Suficciency for Wrexham Council (in line with the new statutory duty of the Welsh government), a reference person for the provision of games by the local authority and holder of the main contract for financing third sector game providers. His work in assessing Play Suficciency in risk management systems in Wrexham has been highlighted in national surveys and publications for example, Play in Wales. Mike provides training in the area of play work, social work and education for children and young people. Mike is particularly interested in the children's perceptions of playing; in playful work, community development centered on games; playing in the public space and flexibility and uncertainty as design principles for spaces intended for children. Mike is a qualified playworker, designer and trainer, with experience in coordinating ATL (Leisure Activities). Ben Tawil is the deputy director of Ludicology, holds a master's degree in research, a B.A. Hons Play and Playwork, and a Postgraduate Degree in Professional Development. Ben has worked in management positions at adventure playgrounds, as Director of Game Development for Local Authorities, as Director of National Game Development for Play Wales and as Senior Professor of Childhood Studies at Glyndwr University. He is a director on the board of two charities 'The Venture' and 'Play Wales'. Ben's work was featured in publications such as: Foundations of Playwork, Playwork Theory in to Practice and Childhood: Services and Provision for Children; as well as in other publications in the area, namely: ip-dip, Play For Wales, PACEY: Childcare Professional Magazine. Ben's Risk Management training (risk assessment methods to define where children play) was delivered across the UK and Australia to hundreds of participants, including teachers, childcare professionals, playworkers, health and safety inspectors, officers / park and landscape designers and others. Ben was a speaker at seminars and conferences such as: 'Play work National Conference', 'Adventure Play Spirit', 'Child in the City', 'IPA', Isle of Mann Children's Center, Northern Ireland Play Board, Play Scotland and others local authorities. He provides training on reflective practices in childhood, child development, playful interventions and the importance of playing.
