About The Speaker
Jill Wood is the Director of Adventure Games at The Parish School, as well as the school librarian. She has a degree in Fine Arts and a master's degree in Library Science and Information Science from the University of Texas, at Austin. Jill is the director of Adventure Play, an after-school program at The Parish School, and has also been a librarian since 2008. She is a co-founder of BayouCity Play, an organization that organizes playgrounds at Shriner's Hospital for Children and pop-up playgrounds every week, throughout the city of Houston. Since 1983, the Parish School has been educating children from 2 to 12 years old with communication difficulties and learning differences, empowering them with the tools for success. This nationally recognized special needs school in Houston offers education for the whole family within the setting of a campus with an on-site pediatric therapy clinic, The Carruth Center. The guidelines of her academic approach are communication, social learning, nature, independence and the arts. The Adventure Park is an environment where children create their own worlds and build their own play space with a variety of tools and scrap: wood, hammers, nails, paint, meters of fabric, pallets, and lots of freedom. Children are supported by adult playworkers, a unique approach that puts the child's ideas and goals first.
